Knowing when and how to start your baby on solid foods can often be an unknown experience for parents, with so much conflicting advice out there and changes in guidelines over time it can be hard to know what to think.
One of my favourite approaches to parenting is trusting your instincts and taking the easy way… whether that’s childbirth, feeding newborns, parenting babies, toddlers or teens. What do I mean? Working with your body or your child, going with what feels right for you and for them and often I think that’s the right way, as nature intended.
So when it comes to introducing your baby to solid foods, making sure we consider safety (choking hazards, appropriate seating, always being present) then letting your baby lead the way and explore food couldn’t be easier, albeit a messy affair! So long as your baby has the jaw mobility to move things to the back of their mouth and swallow (trial & error will answer this), can hold their upper body upright even with support and can get food to their mouth with their hands they are ready to have a go…
There are ways and means of offering food safely and appropriately for your baby’s age and development, reasons why we offer food, how milk is amazing and a lot more to learn which you can find out about on our weaning workshops but mostly you can’t get it wrong. Which I find very reassuring to hear as a parent… To find out more join us on our next weaning workshop.
