Where to give birth…

Choosing where to give birth is an incredibly personal and meaningful decision, one that’s worth considering thoughtfully with your partner. Every pregnancy brings its own set of unique circumstances, from health conditions to emotional readiness, past experiences, and even your vision of what an ideal birth looks like. The truth is, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach; each birth story is its own journey, influenced by so many factors.

Birth is an unforgettable, powerful experience that shapes you. It’s a milestone that leaves lasting memories and emotions, which can impact how you feel about yourself, your body, and even parenting. For me, my feelings and priorities changed between my first and second births. After experiencing a highly medicalised, intense first birth in the hospital—which I found traumatic and overwhelming—I realised that being in a setting with minimal interventions felt essential for my second birth. I chose a home birth, hoping for a more natural, intimate environment. I know that many people find comfort and security in a hospital setting, with immediate access to medical assistance, and that’s completely valid. But for me, I felt that the interventions were actually part of what made my first birth so challenging.

Ultimately, how we choose where to give birth often depends on a mix of factors. How did you make your choice? Was it a straightforward decision, or did you find that circumstances shaped it for you? And, looking back, did it feel like the decision was fully yours to make?
